Geneva, Switzerland, 20 March 2023— The Daikin Group has joined a group of over 200 of the world’s leading sustainable businesses as the newest member of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).
Daikin Group is a global manufacturer founded in 1924 of air conditioning and refrigerants with over USD $27 billion in total net sales (FY 2021). Over the years, Daikin has supplied products and services utilizing environmental technologies as the only company in the world that manufactures both air conditioners and refrigerants. The company has over 100 production bases worldwide and leads the air-conditioning markets with specialized technologies related to heat pumps, inverters and refrigerants. Daikin products are used daily in homes, retail establishments, offices, hotels, factories, distribution warehouses, ships and other spaces.
The Group’s approach is to strive to reduce its impact on the environment throughout the value chain by emphasizing the impact of its products on climate change. Its core business of air conditioning, which has transformed the indoor environment in hot climate regions, is considered a part of the infrastructure that underpins society. Its products and services have been used to prevent heatstroke and improve air quality, thereby contributing to customers’ health and economic development by improving work efficiency. On the other hand, as worldwide demand for air conditioning is expected to triple by 2050, increased demand for electricity poses serious issues.
Daikin CEO Masanori Togawa said, “As part of our WBCSD membership, Daikin is looking forward to working with many companies across sectors and regions to address social issues such as climate change and contribute to realizing sustainability. The Daikin Group’s social mission is to minimize the impact of future global warming while providing healthy and comfortable air environments that are safe and reliable, which has increased in importance during the COVID-19 pandemic. Daikin is committed to being a company always seeking ways to resolve environmental and social issues while achieving business growth.”
WBCSD President & CEO Peter Bakker said: “Solving the global environmental challenges requires innovation and various pathways to provide environmentally progressive solutions. By joining WBCSD DAIKIN Group will bring a wealth of expertise in developing and applying cutting-edge environmentally friendly technologies. We are excited to welcome them and take our climate work forward to ensure we reach a net zero, nature positive and equitable position.”
