Geneva, Switzerland, 19 November 2021: The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) has today issued Vision 2050: Time to Transform in Spanish, developed in collaboration with ACCIÓN Empresas Chile and Perú Sostenible, members of WBCSD’s Global Network.
Visión 2050 : Hora de transformar was introduced at a special session organized jointly with the Ibero-American WBCSD network, attended by senior corporate executives and sustainability professionals from Latin American WBCSD members. This online session provided this group of Latin American sustainable business leaders with an overview of Vision 2050’s framework for business action, as well insights from WBCSD’s Brazilian and Spanish Global Network partners on their own national Vision 2050 adaptation activities.
Julian Hill-Landolt, Director, Vision 2050, commented: “Future business success depends on thriving communities to trade with and a healthy planet for us all to exist on. In Latin America and around the world, the private sector has a key role to play in leading the transformations needed to tackle the climate emergency, halt nature loss and reverse mounting inequality. Vision 2050: Time to Transform is really about what it takes to run companies well, well into the future.”
“These translations are critical if we are to drive transformation throughout the global business community. We are extremely grateful for the support we have received from our Global Network partners ACCIÓN Empresas Chile and Perú Sostenible, extending the reach of our shared vision and bold agenda for business action into a number of key geographies. We look forward to working with our Global Network partners, helping them support their own member efforts to create long-term value, moving beyond business-as-usual and accelerating the system transformations needed for a net zero, nature positive, and more equitable future.”
Vision 2050 is an inspiring and valuable guide that challenges us to transform and move beyond business as usual and engage our member companies as active change agents to address Peru´s development challenges. We look forward to putting it in practice ASAP”, commented Pedro Lerner, President of Perú Sostenible.
During the meeting, Luana Maya from CEBDS Brazil presented the methodology they had developed to “tropicalize” Vision 2050, with strong member company support and involvement. Germán Granda, Director General of the Spanish WBCSD global network member Forética, shared details of how they had drawn on Vision 2050 and WBCSD’s new membership criteria to create an exemplary partnership centered on increased corporate ambition, engagement, and action in Spain. He underlined that “for Forética, it´s an honor to cooperate with the members of the Ibero-American WBCSD global network to continue accelerating the sustainable transformation of business.”
Sergio Rengifo Caicedo, CEO of the Colombian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CECODES), added that “sustainability succeeds when we can apply global goals with local solutions. For this reason, the exercise carried out with the Ibero-American chapters of the WBCSD seems very valuable to me. By learning from each other, we are contributing to a customized Vision 2050, useful to the context of each of our countries. From Colombia we celebrate and support all these initiatives.”
For Anne Kathrin Müller from Acción Empresas, WBCSD’s Chilean global network partner, “getting insight on how the WBCSD developed Vision 2050, understanding the critical role the member criteria play for its implementation and seeing how Spain and Brazil have adapted the Vision to their respective national contexts, has been crucial and will help us with the implementation and roll-out of Vision 2050 in Chile.”
Throughout the discussions, it was highlighted that the systems transformation that Vision 2050 calls for will only happen if everyone becomes a changemaker. WBCSD and its members hope that this translation will encourage dialogue among a wide range of stakeholders, be incorporated into decision-making, and serve as a driver of opportunity and action in the region.
ABOUT VISION 2050
Vision 2050: Time to Transform is WBCSD’s framework for business action in line with the urgency of the challenges that we face as global societies is a comprehensive framework for business action in line with the urgency of the challenges that we face as global societies. At the heart of this framework are nine transformation pathways covering the areas of business activity that are essential to society: energy; transportation and mobility; living spaces; products and materials; financial products and services; connectivity; health and wellbeing; water and sanitation; and food. These pathways offer companies comprehensive and ambitious guidance on how they can lead the transformations needed to bring about a world in which 9+ billion people can live well, within planetary boundaries, by 2050 – in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the targets of the Paris Agreement.
Vision 2050: Time to Transform was launched earlier this year after an 18-month development effort process led by WBCSD and more than 40 of its members, supported by a series of regional engagements with Global Network partners – including special sessions hosted by CECODES in Bogota in August 2019 and CEBDS in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo in November 2019.
In the months since its launch, WBCSD’s leadership team has been exploring the various components of Vision 2050’s framework, helping companies to understand the actions that they can and need to take, and sharing how WBCSD is using Vision 2050 to drive its work with members. We invite you to explore their insights here, as well as to follow our social media accounts.
