Increasing demand for food and other agricultural products will put great strains on land, water, energy and other resources in the coming years, and also heavily impact greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. One way WBCSD members have chosen to tackle the water resource challenge is by developing insights for short-term responses to the Water-Energy-Food nexus, under climate change conditions.

WBCSD’s upcoming report “Co-optimizing Solutions: Water and Energy for Food, Feed and Fiber” will be launched during the” Sustainability in the Water-Energy-Food Nexus” conference on May 20th in Bonn. This document presents smart and scalable solutions to the world’s interconnected water, energy and food, feed and fiber challenges.

Highlighting ways solutions can be integrated to reinforce each other, the report reveals how the world’s growing demand for food and other agricultural products can be met while minimizing environmental impact, with multiple benefits on yields, resource use (energy, water, land…) and climate change mitigation/adaptation. It is based on advanced research and sophisticated quantitative analysis of global linkages compiled by MetaMeta andResourcematics Ltd, and case studies of techniques that forward-thinking companies are using.

Action2020’s Business Solutions include reducing shared water risks, increasing water efficiency in agriculture, restoring productivity to degraded land, and halving food waste from field to fork, all issues linked to the co-optimized solutions detailed in this publication.
