Giulia Carbone

Director, Nature for Climate


Giulia is the Director of the Natural Climate Solutions Alliance, a platform supported by WBCSD and the WEF, since October 2021. In this role, Giulia convenes public and private stakeholders to catalyze demand for high-quality Natural Climate Solutions carbon credits, including the development of tools and guidelines to support businesses in their procurement decisions.

Giulia previously worked for the International Union for Conservation of Nature (2006-2022), as the Deputy Director of the Global Business and Biodiversity Programme where she headed projects in renewable energy, tourism, sport, agri-food, apparel, mining, infrastructure, and oil and gas sectors. In particular, she designed the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative, creating sustainability standard for production, transformation, and use of aluminium, bringing together 12 global companies in the aluminium value chain and civil society organizations; and she structured a new partnership among businesses and NGOs focusing on renewable energy and biodiversity aimed at mitigating biodiversity impacts associated to renewable energy sources. She also worked for the UN Environment Programme (1997-2005), as the Head of the Sustainable Tourism Unit and the coordinator of the Tour Operators’ Initiative for Sustainable Development.

Giulia has a Master of Science degree from the London School of Economics in marine policy (1993), a Master’s in environmental engineering from the Turin Polytechnic (1991), a Bachelor of Arts in economics from the University of California, Santa Barbara, USA (1990) and a Laurea in geography from the Università di Genova, Italy (1997).

Giulia was born in Italy to an Armenian mother and Italian father. She is now based in Switzerland with her husband and 2 children. She is an Italian and a Swiss citizen.

Giulia loves cooking, skiing, hiking and listening to rock music.
